FARO DE CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICO (~700’)
(aka CABO SAN LUCAS LIGHTHOUSE MOUNTAIN)
January 23-26, 2025
By Tim Briese
2.6 miles roundtrip, ~400 feet elevation gain
Teresa and I went to Cabo in January with four friends and we stayed in a nice rental home owned by an acquaintance of one of our friends.

The home we stayed in was located in a beautiful newer development and when we checked in the first day the rental host gave us a walking tour of the property amenities and he pointed out to me a lighthouse on a mountain about a mile away. He noted that there was a trail to the top accessible from our property and that it was very scenic on top. That really piqued my interest and I knew that I wanted to get up there!

The next night after dinner I announced to our group that Teresa and I were getting up early the next morning to hike up to the top of the mountain to see the sunrise, and I asked if anyone wanted to go with us. To my surprise everyone wanted to go, surprising since not all were known to be early risers, let alone avid hikers. However, everybody was up, had their caffeine fix, and were ready to go at my prescribed time the next morning so our enthusiastic group of mountaineers marched off into the semi-darkness of early dawn. The trouble was though, the trail was harder to find than I expected, especially in the near darkness, with no signs and a maze of trails to choose from! Lori suggested we check All Trails, which was a brilliant idea, for it clearly showed the route to the top which I followed with GPS. It was pleasantly cool in the early dawn and we steadily hiked about a mile and a half from our property up to the lighthouse at the summit, gaining about 400 feet of elevation gain in doing so.

There were magnificent views from this commanding vantage point about 700 feet above the ocean below!

The aging lighthouse appeared nonfunctional and was interesting to explore.
We had the mountaintop all to ourselves while we were there. We spent nearly an hour soaking in the grandeur of this special spot before heading back down.
A couple of days later we went on a whale watching tour and happened to cruise on the ocean right below the lighthouse mountain.

I was so enamored with the hike we had done to the lighthouse mountain that I thought it would be cool to see a sunset up there too. When we returned to our place late in the afternoon after the whale tour I said I was going to hike up there again to see the sunset and asked if anyone wanted to go with me. Everybody was tired and it was short notice but Steve wanted to go, so he and I took off and blasted up the trail as fast as we could because the sun would set soon. Again, it was a spectacular treat!
On Sunday morning Teresa and I thought it would be a nice idea to hike up the mountain again for spiritual inspiration. It was a special time for us. She pulled up a rendition of "How Great Thou Art" on her phone which we listened to as we gazed at the magnificent views across the endless ocean.
It was a real treat for me to discover the hike to this inspiring vantage point, and to climb it three times no less!
